CKL WASTE MANAGEMENT UPDATE

As summer approaches, the City of Kawartha Lakes would like to take the opportunity to remind residents and visitors of important Waste and Recycling programs and operational changes due to the current pandemic state.

Although Lindsay Ops, Fenelon and Eldon landfills are open during regular operating hours, we encourage residents to only visit them if necessary and to use curbside collection wherever possible. Due to limited capacity at the sites, we are experiencing longer than normal waiting times and lineups.

Municipal Waste and Recycling Programs:

Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling
: Starting June 1, the City will be implementing a mixed Construction and Demolition waste diversion program for residents at the Lindsay Ops landfill site. All collected material will be recycled to help reduce waste and extend the life of the landfill. Regular tipping fees will apply. Items accepted may include:

  • Painted/unpainted wood

  • Wood containing nails and hardware (knobs and hinges)

  • Shingles

  • Concrete and rubble

  • Drywall (gypsum)

Unacceptable items include garbage, hazardous waste, mattresses and rolls of carpet. These items will need to be separated and disposed of in other diversion programs.

Tire Recycling: As per new regulations the City will no longer be accepting tires at landfill sites as of July 1, 2020. Tire producers are responsible for recycling tires. There are many collection sites within Kawartha Lakes which must accept tires for recycling, such as garages and vendors.

There is a search tool on Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority's (RPRA) website to assist you with finding a close and convenient collection site. For more information, visit their website and type in your postal code to find a collection site near you, or call them at their toll free line 1-833-600-0530.

Environment Round-Up Days: Round-Up Event Days have been cancelled for the 2020 calendar year due to the pandemic.

Leaf and Yard Curbside Collection: The second round of the spring curbside leaf and yard collection will take place in June. Residents are encouraged to place (unlimited) leaf and yard waste at the curb by 7am on the following collection dates:

  • Friday June 5 (for those whose regular collection is on a Monday or Wednesday)

  • Friday June 12 (for those whose regular collection is on a Tuesday or Thursday)

Leaf and yard waste must be in dry paper yard waste bags or bundled with string or twine (less than 3ft/91 cm in length, less than 40 lb/18kg in weight). Branches must be less than 3”/7.6cm in diameter and/or 3ft/91cm in length. Plastic bags are not accepted.

Mattress Recycling: Residents can bring their mattresses and box springs to the Lindsay Ops landfill site for recycling, or purchase mattress tags at select retailers for curbside collection. Residents are encouraged to call ahead if they are bringing items to the landfill.

Wood Chip Giveaway: The free wood chip giveaway program is still running for 2020. Residents can pick up free wood chips every Wednesday from April until October (while quantities last). They are available from 8:30am to 4:30pm at the Lindsay Ops Landfill. Please bring your own shovel and container.

Reuse Programs: Kawartha Lakes is trying to promote reusing wherever possible, however please note the Fenelon Reuse Centre and Lindsay Ops Habitat for Humanity Drop-Off bin are not operating or accepting donations currently due to the pandemic.
