GO JUMP IN THE LAKE!

Balsam Lake residents Jennifer Bacon and Dean Michel have issued a challenge to their friends and neighbours in the Kawarthas. Take the plunge off your dock into whatever lake you're on and raise money for local charities.

“We recognized the need for funds in this time of increased demand at the Coboconk and Area Foodbank due to COVID-19,” Dean said. “I told Jennifer I would jump into the chilly waters of Balsam Lake if I got $500 in donations. I then challenged Jennifer to join me in the plunge if we reached $1,000 and now we're both preparing for it!”

Dean continued, “As the donations rolled in, we've decided to share the challenge with other brave souls on Balsam Lake and other area lakes. Now, almost a dozen families and individuals are going to take the plunge on Saturday, May 2 at 2pm to support their charity of choice.”

“The Coboconk and Area Foodbank (CAFB) is crucial to our community as we have a number of low-income families who rely on us year-round and seasonal workers who rely on us occasionally,” said Food Bank Chair Amy Alfredsson. “After the 2008 recession, food bank usage actually peaked in 2010, showing the lasting effect of an economic downturn. We hope this will not be the case, but we are planning for it.”

The CAFB receives no government funding and relies on private donations “We are fortunate to live in a supportive and generous community,” said Alfredsson.

Dean said, “It’s a $10,000 ice bucket challenge without the bucket. It’s a polar dip while practicing social distancing.”
