OVER THE BACK FENCE
By Deb Crossen
No doubt, these are challenging times for us all. Most of us have never experienced anything like this in our lifetimes. Sure, there was the SARS outbreak in 2002, but we were not self-isolating and maintaining mandatory social distancing. This Coronavirus is a different beast and can affect anyone at any time.
As we all sit at home trying to keep busy and our minds off of the latest statistics, government officials are telling us we are doing our part. By staying home ... and staying at least six feet away from anyone at the supermarket or drugstore. I am amazed by those who ignore this. Whether it's out of ignorance or lack of respect for others they may infect, I'm not sure. But what I am sure of is that it IS up to all of us to do this ... to help “flatten the curve” so our healthcare systems are not overrun ... and that we can get through this together.
I applaud the work of our governments – municipal, provincial and federal – for keeping us informed and doing whatever in their power to help those who need help. The situation is ever-changing and evolving, so for those who ask “why didn't you...” don't you think that's a moot point? Why didn't the government insist that a 14-day self-isolation was mandatory for those returning to Canada from anywhere in the world? I believe they felt a trust in Canadians ... that they would follow the suggestion from healthcare officials who told us to do that. I hope those people who disguised their symptoms so they could get on a flight home wore a mask all the way and went immediately home and stayed there for at least 14 days. No happy reunions with families, no stopping at the grocery store, no possibility of infecting others who are following the rules.
The financial plans the federal and provincial governments are putting in place should alleviate some of the stress and anxiety of those who wonder how they'll pay the rent or buy groceries. We should understand that this process will take some time to get going, but I feel the government is right in making sure it works before they launch a website or phone line. The criticism of some people in the media and on social media is astounding ... they didn't do it soon enough, they aren't legislating landlords to forgive rent or financial institutions to waive mortgage payments and interest, they aren't fining and arresting people for not self-isolating or social distancing. Again, I believe officials are trusting that everyone will do the right thing and understand that this is a temporary measure.
There are no certainties in this situation. At first, there was an explanation for those confirmed with the virus -- they had travelled, or been in a group with someone who travelled. But now, there is “community spread.” That means that anyone, you or I, could become a victim. Unless we stay home ... unless we practice social distancing ... unless we follow the rules.
I am proud of our country and Canadians. I am proud of our officials who, unlike the American president, are following the advice of experts and helping the rest of the world. We will get through this ... stronger than before ... and with our community spirit intact. Please be safe.
