HIKE SAFELY
Recently, members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called out early in the morning to assist in locating three missing hikers.
Two men and a woman went for a hike in Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park one evening. A family member contacted police the next morning and reported that they were concerned for the hikers' safety as they had not returned home.
After a brief search, members of the Peterborough County OPP with assistance from the Central Region Canine Unit and Central Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) located the hikers north of Buckhorn. The hikers were wet and cold but uninjured.
The Peterborough County OPP would like to offer hikers the following tips:
Hike in a group
Consume small snacks and water throughout the hike
Carry a map and compass
Study a map and trail guide beforehand
Let someone know where you are going and when you are expected to return
Pack a first aid kit
Dress for the conditions
